Conditions I can help with:

Women’s Health Physiotherapy Halifax is a highly specialist physiotherapy service supporting women with a range of problems and at different life stages. From the management of antenatal and postnatal pregnancy related musculoskeletal symptoms (e.g. pelvic girdle pain, back pain, diastasis rectus abdominis (separated tummy muscles)), where I have specific background knowledge and training about the changes and challenges in pregnancy, birth and the post-natal period....... to women in their peri-menopausal period and post-menopause who may have newly emerging or chronic symptoms.

As a women’s health physiotherapist I treat women with a range of pelvic floor symptoms including; urinary incontinence (stress urinary incontinence and urge urinary incontinence), pelvic organ prolapse, pelvic floor dysfunction due to weakness or overactivity (e.g. vaginismus), pelvic pain (e.g. coccydynia, vulvodynia), sexual dysfunction, and for women in need of preparation for upcoming gynaecological surgery, or for additional therapy post-operatively or post-nataly.

Treatment

I offer a wide range of interventions to give a holistic treatment to my patients including: education, functional advice, motivation and empowerment regarding long term self-management, specific individualised pelvic floor muscle training, biofeedback, neuromuscular electrical stimulation, acupuncture, electro-acupuncture (especially for overactive bladder), manual therapy including myofascial release, scar massage, stretches and mobilisations, breathing awareness, relaxation, guidance re toileting techniques for bladder and bowel, bladder retraining, constipation management, health promotion, postural re-education, strengthening and stabilising exercises.

Supervised pelvic floor muscle training is the first line treatment for pelvic floor dysfunction (NICE guidelines CG171).  It is supported by evidence to be effective for both urinary incontinence and for prolapse.  It is also evidenced to improve surgical outcomes for both prolapse and incontinence. Women's Health Physiotherapists have the knowledge and skillset to provide a detailed assessment and prescription of treatment to optimally rehabilitate the pelvic floor muscles.

Approach

I focus on delivering the highest quality of patient care in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. I understand that no two people or conditions are the same, which is why I create a custom-made treatment plan for each patient. No matter what you need, I am here to help you every step of the way.
